Are We As Good As We Need to Be? Requirements and Testing in the Real World

In a perfect world, all components and subsystems would have stringent reliability requirements that are proven via testing of multiple units over long durations at conditions identical to their use environment. However, we must live in the real world. In the real world, we must prove that our products meet their reliability requirements within the limitations of budget and schedule. By looking at three examples of real components/subsystems with varying degrees of complexity, significance and resource constraints, we will discuss the process followed within GE Healthcare-Life Support Solutions for developing reliability requirements and demonstrating compliance with those requirements.
