DFSS and DFR: Combined to Drive a Successful Design

Design For Six Sigma (DFSS) repackages many quality tools and techniques appropriate for product development into a framework. However, in the current DFSS process, Design for Reliability (DFR) is only a single step in analysis. This can confuse the practitioner and lead to inefficient application of the tools. This presentation clarifies that DFSS and DFR should be treated as two parallel processes or combined into one process in a practical design. It also gives an example of how DFR helped to find the hidden project requirements by conducting DFR tools at an early time in DFSS process. Finally, the presentation proposes an effective DFSS/DFR process in Electronics design.

Xiaohong Chen
Fulham Electronics, China

Dr. Chen has been focused on DFR/DFSS for 6 years. She acted as a Reliability Expert and a BB/DFSS in GE Transportation. Dr. Chen mentored reliability practitioners and 6 Sigma Green Belts there. She also conducted routine DFSS/DFR trainings in GE China Technical Center. Dr. Chen has just joined Fulham Electronics Co. as a R&D manager. She is continuing her role as a DFSS/DFR expert in addition to her management work. To practice DFSS/DFR methodology in daily work and life has been her greatest interest.
