International Applied Reliability Symposium

Track 1 Session 8
2:10 to 3:10 p.m. Friday October 26, 2007

Introduction to HALT & HASS, and Comparisons to the Real World

While many companies in the Asia Pacific region have heard of both Highly Accelerated Life Testing (HALT) and Highly Accelerated Stress Screening (HASS), there is a distinct lack of experienced practitioners in the region. This lack of experience is dangerous due to the high opportunity cost of applying these techniques incorrectly.

Reliable, robust products are the product of conducting HALT and HASS correctly. In this session, the theory to these test methods will be outlined and explained with practical failure examples. The relevance of test failures will be identified by the use of real world examples and field failure comparisons. The process of HALT & HASS will be outlined, along with a brief explanation on the ability of both test methods to uncover timing related issues in software -- a little known fact about HALT & HASS that will be backed up with real examples of failures and their associated corrective actions.

The last portion of the presentation will focus on the field environment, and particularly transport paths, and methods employed by companies worldwide. The levels of shock, vibration, drop height, humidity and temperature will be explained with data gathered through field data recorders on actual product shipments. This will provide comprehensive evidence of the dangers of the shipping environment and the need to test products to these limits.
