Experimental Design for Two-Variable Accelerated Life Testing

Accelerated life tests (ALTs) are widely used to assess the reliability of highly reliable products that are not likely to fail at normal levels of stress. Most of the literature regarding the planning of ALTs treats the situation in which there is one accelerating factor with no additional experimental factors. However, ALTs using more than one accelerating factor or other experimental factors are common in practice. Since accelerated life tests usually need to be conducted within stringent cost and time constraints, careful planning is essential. This presentation develops methods and guidelines for planning two-factor step-stress accelerated life test experiments for models in which there is no interaction between the two factors. For most practical ALTs concerned with censored data, previous estimated parameters are needed to prepare the design. An example is provided to illustrate the proposed design method and how to prepare the ALT design including distribution family selection, accelerating model determination and the corresponding parameter estimations via historical data.
