Platform Level Qualitative Analysis of a Complex Technical System

Excerpt from an aircraft maintenance log:

Technical Problem: Left-inside main tyre almost needs replacing. Remedial Action Taken: Almost replaced left-inside main tyre.

Entries made to maintenance logs do not always indicate when a failure has occurred. Using existing maintenance data without proper review can lead to inaccurate predictions in reliability. This presentation will show the experiences of an engineering team as they conducted a qualitative analysis for the Australian Defence Force’s F/A-18 Hornet and their lessons learnt in finding the Mean Time Between Critical Failure (MTBCF).

Key Words: RBD Development, Qualitative Analysis
