Reliability Evaluation of Radial Distribution System Using a Modified Analytical Simulation Technique

A modern power system has the primary function of satisfying the system load and energy requirements at the lowest possible cost and with a reasonable assurance of continuity and quality of supply. Distribution system reliability is usually defined as the ability of an electric power distribution network to provide an adequate supply of electrical energy. Distribution system reliability indices can be evaluated using analytical approaches such as Network modeling and Markov modeling and using simulation approaches such as Monte Carlo simulation and analytical simulation approach. This presentation introduces some modifications on the Analytical Simulation Technique (AST), to accurately assess the reliability of radial distribution system from a practical point of view. The technique is then used to assess the reliability of Roy Billinton Test System (RBTS) Bus 4 Feeder 4 and the reliability of a practical system. The most commonly used distribution system reliability indices are addressed in this presentation, including frequency-oriented indices, duration-oriented indices and energy-oriented indices.
