Reliability and Maintainability Symposium: ARS, Europe Europe

Track 1 Session 10
9:20 to 10:20 a.m. Friday March 28, 2008

Six Sigma Optimization of Reliable Transportation Methods

During transportation to Eastern European sites, a considerable amount of damage to high tech equipment was experienced. The origin of the main impacts was measured. To prevent more damage, a suitable set of damping elements was optimized to shield the sensitive equipment from the harsh environment. This was part of a Six Sigma project using the unique features of statistics and optimization to reduce the amount of tests and sample costs. The objectives of the Six Sigma project described in this presentation were to:

  • Determine quantitatively the mechanical and dynamic loads during the original method of transportation
  • Analyze the dominating factors
  • Improve the critical factors
  • Measure the improvements
  • Control the new method of transportation, go back to improvement if there is a further need

Key Words: Reliability Tests, Dynamic Behavior of Damping Material, Six Sigma, Design for Six Sigma (DFSS), Reliability of Transportation, Packaging, Global Validation, Lifetime of Electro-mechanical Devices
