Electrical Substation Reliability Assessment Using the Analytical Approach and the Monte Carlo Simulation Technique – A Real Case Evaluation

Today, there are excellent, powerful, academic and commercial software tools for evaluating and assessing the reliability of components and systems. However, for the reliability and maintenance engineer it is always useful to know the best methods or techniques, considerations, components modeling, calculation steps and simulation types for assessing the reliability of complex systems, in this case represented by CVG EDELCA “Cuatricentenario 400/230 kV” power transmission substation.

This presentation emphasizes the comparison of two methods used in reliability evaluation of complex systems: the analytical calculation approach method and the Monte Carlo simulation method. This main goal is achieved by confronting the final results (indices). The link between quantitative reliability assessment and maintenance strategy and scheduling optimization is also highlighted.

Key Words: Real Data Reliability Assessment, Chronological Monte Carlo Simulation, Algorithm, Analytical Calculations, Comparison
