Increasing Mandrel Life in Cold Ring Rolling Process: An Application of DOE Principles to Reliability Analysis
Using Design of Experiments (DOE) principles to improve the life of machine equipment is one of the basic application areas of reliability engineering. Since the maintainability and availability of an entire machine depends on its components and subsystems, improving the life of these components highly contributes to the manufacturing efficiency of a company. This presentation examines the basic failure behavior of a mandrel component and seeks the ways of improving its life by the use of DOE principles. Classical DOE approaches and Reliability DOE approaches are both discussed. The study not only solves the life problem but also optimizes the process cycle time. Multiple Response Optimization (MRO) techniques are also presented through the use of the DOE++ software.
