Reliability and Maintainability Lessons Learned for "More Electric" Ships and Aircraft

"More electric" systems play an increasing role in the latest commercial airliners and warships, and are beginning to replace conventional technologies such as fluid and pneumatic power. From a reliability and maintenance perspective, however, "more electric" architectures are not without their challenges, especially with respect to the greater heat loads generated and the need for additional cooling systems. Valuable lessons have been learned in recent years with regard to mitigating these impacts on systems ranging from maritime powerplants to aircraft flight controls, and these will be the subject of this presentation.

Key Words: More Electric Aircraft, Electric Ship, Power Electronics Reliability
