Highly Accelerated Product Testing to Predict Reliability of New Products

In the present global competitive business scenario, there is an increasing pressure on manufacturers of automobile components to predict the reliability of their new products. The methods of life testing to build reliability are consuming an enormous amount of time. The overseas customers, and in particular their counterparts in India, expect component manufacturers to indicate the reliability of their new products in terms of B10 life or a similar measure. Building a Weibull analysis based on actual product testing and predicting the B10 life may be too time-consuming. Hence a process of accelerated testing becomes a must.

While carrying out accelerated testing, the process has to very carefully take into account selected environmental conditions, usage conditions, overloading, misuse, etc. When carrying out accelerated testing, the reliability can be predicted more accurately by taking into account competitor products as well as the new product under development.

This presentation describes the process of accelerated testing and the process of prediction of reliability of a new product in the automotive industry.

Key Words: Reliability Engineering, Weibull Distribution, B10 Life, Life Assessment, FMEA, FTA, Accelerated Testing
