Failure Mode Effect Diagnostic Analysis (FMEDA) – An Essential Tool in Safety Analysis

Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) is a systematic analysis where we analyse the effects of various failure modes of a component with respect to system functionality and look for design change for avoiding or reducing failure modes that are critical in nature.

Failure Mode Effect Diagnostic Analysis (FMEDA) is an extension of FMEA where we identify the online diagnostic techniques and the failure modes relevant to safety instrumented system design.

This presentation discusses FMECA and how to calculate the Safe Failure Fraction (SFF). We will use an example to illustrate the techniques and discuss the benefits and limitations of the analysis.

Key Words: FMEA, FMEDA, Safe Failure Fraction (SFF), Safety Instrumented Systems
