2008 ARS, India Risk-Informed Approach for Nuclear Plants Development work has been in progress with respect to the application of the Probabilistic Safety Assessment (PSA) studies in support of decision-making for safety and mission critical systems such as nuclear and space and launching systems, as well as industrial systems that include chemical plants and process plants. In fact, the nuclear industry was the first to pioneer this technology. PSA studies have become part of regulatory design and operational review, assessment of the adequacy of system modifications, and prioritization of the nuclear plant equipment and components for test and maintenance scheduling. This presentation provides an overview of the state-of-the-art that exists in the area of application of this technology based on the insight obtained from the proceedings of an International Conference on Reliability Safety and Hazard recently organized in India (with the theme “Advances in Risk-Informed Technology Development”). Apart from this, the presentation also reviews the pioneering efforts being made by various international bodies with respect to the application PSA technology as part of decision-making. The objective was to have an assessment of the maturity of this innovative tool for real-life applications, such as decisions related to evaluation of operational events, plant modifications, identification of plant vulnerabilities, critical human actions, etc. Case studies will be presented to bring out the applications of PSA to address real-world scenarios. Finally, this presentation identifies the areas for future work for further consolidating and refining the existing PSA methodology. Key Words: Probabilistic Safety Assessment, Reliability Engineering Applications, Nuclear Plants, Risk-informed Decisions, PSA applications, Operator Support Systems, Innovative Systems
